TravelSmart is an initiative of TransLink, Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation authority. The TravelSmart website features articles and tools to help Metro Vancouverites make daily changes toward sustainable travel.

A bright color palette sets the eco-conscious tone while the perpetually modern Neo® Sans typeface – chosen for headlines, body copy and the TravelSmart logo – ties things together.

The site was architected and developed by FCV, a Vancouver-based interactive agency. “We tried a variety of options for using type on the Web, but this one is our favorite,” said Warren Anthony,  vice president of  user  experience at FCV. “Ease of use, searchable and on brand. Using Fonts.com Web Fonts is a win-win-win.”

Today we unveiled a new self-hosting option within Fonts.com Web Fonts. This new feature of our professional plans allows you to serve Web fonts from your existing servers or content delivery network. Using it is straightforward: Login to the Fonts.com Web Fonts portal, create a project and choose your fonts just as you would if you were using our service for font delivery. On the publish tab, you’ll see a new self-host option where you can download the self-host kit for your project.

This handy kit contains everything you need to serve fonts to all major browsers. You’ll find all your fonts in the various Web font formats, the syntax to add to your CSS and a demo page that provides instructions and a preview of your fonts in use. Add the fonts to your server, paste the code into your CSS, and you’re on your way.

This is a particularly gratifying feature release for us. For one, the ability to self host has been one of our most requested features. Additionally, we’re pleased that we’ve implemented it in a way that allows customers to retain the advantages of using a service. (I’ve bulleted the major ones below.)

Based on a lot of conversations with customers, we knew it was essential to offer a solution that allowed us to:

  • Continually update the font delivery service to ensure compatibility with new and updated browsers
  • Provide regular updates to our fonts to enhance display quality and easily provide the latest data to customers
  • Offer a diverse and growing selection of fonts for customers to choose from now and later when design needs change

In short, we learned we need to solve the immediate problems of our customers while allowing them to return as technology, fonts and design needs evolve.

The primary benefits sited above are not offered by others who provide solutions for self-hosting. With our approach, “self-hosters” can download a new self-host kit at any time – giving them the control they seek with the confidence of knowing they’ll always have access to our most up-to-date offering. So, whether there’s a hot, new browser to contend with, or you want to take advantage of some screen optimization on your corporate fonts, or you just want to try out some new typefaces – you won’t be left behind when you self-host through us. For the customer who prefers to serve fonts themselves, we believe this “self-hosted as a service” approach provides the best of both worlds.
