Below you’ll find a list of the top 100 most used fonts from the Fonts.com Web Fonts service during March. We’ll first take a closer look at a perennial favorite though: Trade Gothic. Since their initial release in the 1940s, the Trade Gothic® family has been a stable of North American graphic design. They were popular as fonts of metal type, as phototypesetting designs of the 1970s and 1980s and as digital fonts for print design. This popularity continues to this day, as the Trade Gothic family is ranked number one in the Fonts.com Web Font Service—ahead of both the Avenir® Next and Neue Helvetica® typeface families.

Trade Gothic

“Since its initial release in the 1940s, the Trade Gothic® family has been a stable of North American graphic design”

When first released, Trade Gothic went by the simple name of “Gothic” with a numeric suffix (Gothic No. 17 through No. 20) identifying the various family members. These were condensed designs intended for what was then called “jobbing” or “trade” work. It wasn’t until several years later that the then expanded family was given the name of “Trade Gothic.”
