Linotype’s classic “Legibility Group” of typefaces are the earliest designs specifically created to be highly legible in a less than ideal reading environment. Designed in the 1920s, their goal was to improve the reading experience in newspapers of the day. The designers of these metal typefaces enlarged lowercase x-heights and made the glyphs proportionally wider. They also opened up apertures, added weight slightly, and dug “ink traps” into the acute angles of glyphs.

Decades later, these same design traits are being incorporated into typefaces designed specifically for the web and small screen environments. The Neue Swift® typeface family – sitting at number 26 on last month’s Top 100 Web Font list – was drawn by Gerard Unger in the late 1980s for one of the first digital typesetters. Actually, it was first released as simply Swift but the design was significantly updated and improved in the mid-1990s and its name was changed to reflect this. Neue Swift’s distinctive “Latin” serifs and chiseled shapes give it an authoritative air in small text and large display sizes.
